In Brief
Mull Theatre - Opium Eater
Information
Opium Eater by Andrew Dallmeyer
It’s Edinburgh, 1820, and Thomas De Quincey, the flawed English man of letters and laudanum addict, sits shivering in his dingy lodgings beneath a Grassmarket brothel. Driven by demons from without and within, he scribbles desperately to meet a deadline which has already passed, and waits on his simple-minded servant Willie to bring him the laudanum he craves.
By turns electrifying, richly comic and deeply moving, this is an utterly compelling portrait of a bizarre and symbiotic relationship.
“The wonderful mastery of image in the author's work is reflected in the dialogue” Robert Gore-Langton
“… combines an exuberant eccentricity with a genuine passion for words and a powerful economy of expression” Time Out
“... one of the best things I have ever seen in fringe theatre” Martin Cropper, The Times
